I'll post the answer this evening but I'm betting this won't stump the experts for very long.

Things started Nov. 4, 1979 and ended 444 days later. At least eight men died here.

Answer:

The location is 'Desert One' in roughly the center of Iran.

Operation Eagle Claw was a bold and daring rescue attempt of 53 Americans held hostage in Tehran, Iran. The mission that had been rehearsed to perfection, executed by superbly trained units, supported by a joint task force and led by outstanding commanders failed. America’s elite rescue force lost eight men, seven helicopters, and a C-130 (pictured), and had not even made contact with the enemy.

In Memory Of

Air Force

Maj. Richard L. Bakke

Capt. Lyn D. McIntosh
Capt. Charles T. McMillan
Tech. Sgt. Joel C. Mayo

Marines

Cpl. George N. Holmes, Jr.

The 53 hostages were not freed until January 20, 1981, 444 days after they had been captured.

Oh duh! That's what I get for reading that at work. I was going to put more more information in my comment, relating to the crash of the C-130 that killed the 8 men, but then deleted it because I didn't think you wanted all that detail. I thought the hostage crisis was all you were looking for.

Amazingly, I had totally forgotten about this point in history. It was a time in my life when I was busy running after 3 munchkins and I guess much of what was happening in the world just passed me by.

Many years ago while out and about in King of Prussia, I met a former Marine who was involved in this mission.

(I really feel so OLD when I start saying MANY years ago... most of the time I forget I am 51!)
