Ol' Barney

This is where I am heading, for the end of the virtual walk:

The picture is from the bayside. The lighthouse was built under the supervision of George Meade in 1858. General Meade, as some of you know, was the Commanding General of the Union forces during (and after) the Battle of Gettysburg, PA. A battle "won" by the north on July 4th, 1863.

The red and white tower is 165 feet tall, and includes 217 steps to the top. The lighthouse was first lit on January 1,1859 and was retired in 1927. When operational, the light could be seen from as far as 30 miles.

Nearing the end of the journey...

On July 1, 2005 I started walking for health reasons. To make the walk interesting, I decided to make it a virtual walk across the USA starting from ocean (in New Jersey) on the east coast, walking along PA turnpike, to I-70 and then across the desert in Nevada to descend out of the mountains into San Francisco to a park at the base of the Golden Gate bridge and the Pacific Ocean.

This route measures 3030 miles one way.

I got myself a very trusty and dependable (as you will see) pedometer and walked a measured mile to calibrate it. I ended up walking measured miles on more than a few occassions to recalibrate or to verify it was accurate from time to time as the walk progressed and my gait changed due to tiredness, illness, or injury. To keep track of things, I started a walk log and set myself monthly distance goals.

On September 28, 2006 I made it to the Pacific Ocean, took a virtual look at the Golden Gate Bridge and immediately turned around and headed back.

...it is now November 29, 2007 (2 years and four months later) and the journey is almost at end. As I write this, I have 27 miles to go!

Summary

Best Month 5/2006 - 259 miles
Best Day 9/22/2007 - 26.89 miles

I wore out 5 pairs of walking shoes and about 10-12 pairs of heavy walking socks.

I suffered NO foot conditions worse than rawness and tiredness. NO blisters, just some really ugly red hot spots :-)

On Sunday 12/2/2007, I should be done, back at the Atlantic Ocean.

Projections: 14,050,884 steps totalling 6060.53 miles.

Pedometer Omron HJ-113, it was so comfortable to wear, I accidently wore it swimming a couple times!

I plan to start a new walk, this time north to south and back.

To offset the "ugly" dog pictures... I am posting my favorite dog.

We the walking wounded...

...Well, today, I managed to plod about 300 paces which is enough to get me out to the car and into work. After missing about 4 days (I did some work at home) I find myself 3 weeks behind. How does that happen?

Anyway, it was good to get out of the cabin, even if the weather does suck.

Hmmm...

“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.” - Adolph Hitler in Mein Kampf

...proof that someone in America's government... actually can read?

A waist is a terrible thing to mind...

Tis the season to especially watch what we eat... starting with Halloween, a couple birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the holiday parties, News Years Eve, the Sunday football parties and all the while being less active since the sun, "it aint shining" after 5 PM.

Oh well.

I am able to sit upright for a few minutes today, the first time since hurting my back early Sunday morning. I wasn't doing much, just lifting a heavy chair with a swivel base over a door threshold when the chair swiveled, twisting my back with it. I saw the usual stars and ended up on the floor. Sigh, I think this is about 5th or 6th time this has happened. Once I was shovelling snow and turned to throw the snow on to the bank ... and down I went.

After I can tolerate standing a bit, I know I will have to walk (slowly) for a ways, perhaps 2-3 miles, for all the muscles back there (I mean "all" collectively, not "all" like in incredible Hulk massive!) to warm up, loosen up and ease the pull on the lower spine. After that, I'm good to go, until I twist it again. I've become very very careful... this last time was an unexpected accident.

Anywaysy, its back to the prone position. I've made a dent in my backlog of stuff to read, I might even have to go through with the paying the bills to keep from totally being bored silly.

Found a couple websites (blogs) that I enjoyed...

http://queenscrap.blogspot.com/ which is, loosely, a political activism blog against over-development in Queens borough (one of the 5 boroughs that make up New York City)

and

http://www.newyorkshitty.com/ which is about a Brooklyn woman that crusades against the trash, poop, and other ugliness that city dwellers are forced to put up with (including scum that masterbate while riding the subways). Her "tirades" against vinyl siding, dog poop and the like are, in my opinion, humorous, marvelously written (the tongue in cheek stuff is superb!) and well directed.

All for your consideration. I am tempted to start one called Philthy-delphia... but nah, that would be far too easy.

Cough Drops

This elderly woman passed a police van loading up the girls from a local brothel, and as she passed by, she asked one girl what the lineup was for.

The girl shrugged and said, jokingly, "cough drops" and snickered.

Just then the cop approached the old gal and said, "What are you doing here, ma'am?"

The woman pulled herself up to her full height of 4'9" and replied, "Well, I can suck em can't I?"

Some more cool photographs from someone else... The first is a sunset photo...

The maple tree's are best this year, I think...

This is from near Smyrna Delaware...

And as they used to say on Monty Python, "Now for something different."

A slow day in ... "paradise"

I stumbled into the blog site below:

http://quotation-marks.blogspot.com/

and enjoyed a few laughs. The point being made is that quote marks are way overused and misused.

The premise is that quote marks mean "not really what is in the quotes".

Okay, chew on that one...

"Apple Pie" for instance is ... well, its not really apple pie, its fake/mock apple pie.
