"The distinguished American poet Edgar Allan Poe, was impoverished before he died, and found delirious and distressed outside a Baltimore tavern after leaving Richmond, Virginia a week before. He never regained his senses enough to relay what had happened to him.

He died four days later in hospital on October 7, 1849.

Fewer than 10 people attended Poe's original funeral 160 years ago. The funeral itself was hastily prepared, and Poe's cousin, Neilson Poe, never formally announced his death.

His funeral was plagued from the beginning when a train derailed, crashing into the stonecutter's yard, destroying Poe's tombstone before it could be installed. Also, Rufus Griswold, an enemy of Poe's, wrote a libelous obituary that damaged Poe's reputation for many years to come.

You know how you hear some sayings and expressions and they just stick with you for a while? My Dad used to say "What are the dumb ones like?", whenever me or my brothers screwed something up. Nothing like negative flattery huh?

The expression that's been bouncing around in my head lately, however comes from playgrounds of Elementary School. My memory is a little foggy now, but I think it was in the sixth grade and I was playing kickball with my schoolmates when one of them got bored with things and started climbing the downspout on the side of the school building. He got up to the third floor before he decided he was stuck and wouldn't go up or down.

His increasing panicked yelling finally attracted the attention of the teacher on "yard duty" and after a bit of frenetic excitement complete with hook and ladder truck from the local fire department, my schoolmate was "rescued". The ironic thing was this boy's father was the Fire Chief.

Anyway, gathered up and back in class, the teacher (who will remain unnamed) asked my schoolmate (who will also remain unnamed) what the heck he thought he was doing. My schoolmate mumbled, muttered, and yammered until the teacher, who had been greatly embarrassed by the whole affair, finally lost his temper and said through clenched teeth, "Gather yourself up young man! Your brain is like a BB rattling around in a pickle barrel!"

Ever since then, "like a BB in a pickle barrel" floats through my head at semi-random moments...much like a BB rattling around in a pickle barrel.


It occurred to me some of you are probably too young to remember what a pickle barrel is, they used to be common at the supermarket in the deli section. The ones I remember where large-ish plastic tubs with clear hinged plastic lids and long handled tongs with a plastic bag dispenser nearby. They might even be illegal now.

This query / program when run, hopefully results in really boring report showing no one has experienced a serious adverse reaction to a drug being tested in a clinical trial.
