Saying Goodbye to Dad

On August 9th, around 2:30 AM, my father passed away in his sleep, comfortably and peacefully. The link is to my Dad's Obituary. I still find it very difficult to write or talk about this. I have so many memories of him that they swirl around in my head like a kaleidoscope. Everything I have, I owe to my father.

Here he is in Florida, holding up a nice size Snook. It took us a dozen fishing trips to catch one of these elusive fish. His smile says it all.

I've have been overwhelmed by the caring support of my friends and neighbors. I cannot begin to say how much I appreciate all of you. I received beautiful cards from Chicago Lady, my older brother's in-laws, my mom's niece that lives in Maine, Far Side, Soul Comfort, my dad's first cousin's wife, A Bench With a View, Alice Kay, and Lady Styx and her husband. So many texts and emails I can only hope to answer them all eventually; visits from neighbors, some bearing plates with food, and some marvelous flowers - including one from a client that sits on my office desk beside my keyboard.

On his last day with us, I wheeled my dad out to the porch where we watched the birds at the feeders. We had dozens of visits from Hummingbirds. At the other feeder were Cardinals, Woodpeckers, Goldfinches, Purple Finches, Tuffed Titmouse's, Sparrows, Blue Jays, Catbirds, Mockingbirds, Orioles, and even a Squirrel that the feeder spun off to the ground three times before he or she gave up. It was a calming time for both of us.

I still can't believe he is gone.

New Years Day With the Birds

About halfway between my house and my parents house, just outside the town of Doylestown, is the Peace Valley Nature Center, located on the end of Lake Galena.

Having been asked to stop at the Doylestown Mennonite Church to see if a certain Godshalk family was buried in the church yard cemetery, I made plans to meet my mom afterwards at the nature center, which is just up the road a piece.

an interesting old gravestone
In the quiet stillness, surrounded by old stones, I found the gravestones of William (1781 - 1837) and his wife, Magdalena Kratz Godshalk (1782 - 1868). I've never seen a gravestone quite like this one. The green stone says, "In memory of William Godshalk who died the 12th day of December 1837, aged 56 years (obliterated) month and (obliterated) days. I saw that his wife outlived him by many years.

At the nature center, located on Chapman Road, is a bridge over the Neshaminy Creek.

stone and mortar bridge built in 1886
This bridge, now closed to vehicle traffic, is no spring chicken, having been built in 1886.

a view of the lake
From Chapman's Bridge, one can see down the 3-mile long, man made, Lake Galena, created when Bucks County flooded the valley in 1972.

Before that time, much of the lakebed had been part of the village of Leven, the economy of which was based largely on lead ore (known as Galena) mining. Mining of galena (in addition to small amounts of zinc, silver, copper and gold) had been mildly successful since the 1860's.

Down beneath the surface of the water, near the center of the 3-mile long lake, are the long abandoned lead mine shafts and smelting operations.

Water from the lake is used to provide cooling water for the PECO*-owned Limerick Nuclear Power Plant and for augmenting public drinking water supplies. It is also used for recreation by man and by "more than 250 species of birds."

The nature center end of the park has miles of trails winding through the woods along the bank of the Neshaminy Creek. Neshaminy is a Native American word that means "the double drinking place," or "where we drink twice".

a person with a telescope looking at birds
On New Years Day (and the week later), the recreational folks were out in force, enjoying the unseasonably warm weather - and so were the birds.

two mostly white with black tail feathers snow geese
I saw a pair of Snow Geese, much to my mom's excitement, as we've never seen them before in Pennsylvania (they cover the empty corn and wheat fields in Maryland when they migrate.)

a great blue heron stalking food in the rocks
Lurking around the rocks at the foot of the dam, I spotted a Great Blue Heron. I think this one was actually a little smaller than most as they run to 4 feet tall. They usually eat small fish, though they will feed on a wide range of shrimp, crabs, aquatic insects, rodents and other small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and small birds. Herons locate their food by sight and usually swallow it whole. It is quite a sight to see the lump in their necks as they strive to "get something down."

a group of Mallard ducks in flight over the lake
With a great commotion, a large flock (or brace) of Mallard Ducks took to the air when disturbed by a large raptor. In this case, I think it was a Sharp-shinned Hawk, looking for dinner. I got a blurry shot of the hawk (here).

the view on the other side of Chapmans Bridge
Circling the lake, we returned to Chapman's Bridge, where the widening of the Neshaminy Creek makes a small pond that holds fish, snakes, and my favorite, turtles. Even unseasonable weather wasn't going to bring the warm sunshine loving turtles out of their winter hibernation, buried in the mud.

an ocha with a wire run through his head
As I mentioned, Chapman's Bridge is closed to vehicle traffic. A braided wire, strung between two bollards and into this (un?)fortunate OCHA's head, blocks the road at one end of the bridge. I thought it had pierced ears, but Ladystyx tells me this OCHA is a rare Nordic Viking. My mom thinks it's a University of Texas Longhorn fan. What do you think?

tee-shirts at the nature center
Peeking into the Nature Center's giftshop, I spotted a couple t-shirts that made me laugh loud enough to have the saleswoman come over to see if I was alright. My mom wanted to know if I was taking my medication regularly, like I'm supposed to.

Well... I thought it was funny.

A Weekend in Rochester, NY

Just a short entry today - I'm a little busy at work (thank heavens for that!) and very busy trying to catch up with everyone else as well as write cards in the spare minutes...

This past weekend was my youngest nephew's High School graduation ceremony.

my nephew he's a red head and freckled
Here he grins for me after I told him I was impressed with his diploma and that I thought it was nice to get a piece a paper for basically continuing to breath for 17 years. I told him college might be a little more "challenging".

my nephew with his girl friend
He's got a good life - he can bowl 300 games, hit holes in one on the golf course, been accepted into Rochester Institute of Technology and has a fabulous girl friend that graduated in the same class as he did. Look at that smile on her! Her heart is just as big.

my older brother walking his border collie
After eating celebratory cake and ice cream and having a picnic with burgers and hot dogs - it was time to get out and walk some. My brother lives near the Lehigh Valley Railroad Black Diamond trail, a 12-mile railroad bed that has been turned into a bike-walk trail that meanders through the farms and woods. I have a hard time walking across bridges - vertigo - bridgephobia - whatever you want to call it, bothers me mightily. Fortunately this bridge was at the very end of our walk, so my older brother and his dog walked over it and back - just to be able to say they walked the whole way.

It's a beautiful trail - click here to see some pictures others have taken.

Do you see him coming?

The dog takes the lead! I think she spotted me! Her name is Keilau (after my brother and his wife, Keith and Laurie).

my older brother walking his border collie
Coming closer and closer!

my older brother walking his border collie
Hey!! Who's that!!?!

I think this is my favorite picture from the entire weekend. I really enjoyed getting out and walking - and to make it even more exciting, we saw some animals!

As in snakes... four-five foot long black snakes... Chipmunks, squirrels (sorry Charlie, no photos), frogs...

...and a baby deer... just a few days old! A spotted fawn that was mostly stilt-like legs! I would have taken a picture of him/her but I had the dog, Keilau and her leash in hand - and she was going coo-coo for cocoa puffs as the little fawn wobbled off!

The Great Squirrel Hunt

Yesterday, I decided to walk over at the Heebner Green Space Park which is on my drive home. It is a convenient place to walk a couple miles and with it getting darker earlier and earlier, I didn't want to take the extra fifteen or twenty minutes or so that it would take me to get over to Valley Forge National Historic Park (although I prefer to walk there). As the days get shorter and shorter, my walking options get fewer and fewer.

I also decided that it was long past time to get a picture of nice squirrel, or Charlie as we call them; further thinking the ones I see in this park might be a bit tamer or less skittish than the ones of over at Valley Forge.

To be honest, I'm not sure how well that line of thinking worked out...

nuts in the trees
I put my camera in my "rapid deployment" pocket and set out looking for "charlie signs." I soon saw a bunch of green nuts hanging from what I think is a Black Locust tree.

With winter approaching, I thought to myself, "Keep sharp, Iggy. Be alert (the world needs more lerts!) The Charlies will be about, stowing away these nuts to eat during the harder months ahead."

nuts on the ground
Oh look here! The trail is still warm. I see nuts broken apart and the meats within have disappeared.

Let's take a closer look to see if we can learn anything. These nuts look like Hickory nuts. If you've never eaten a Hickory nut, please don't. They are really bitter and pretty awful. Charlies, on the other hand, really, really like these nuts and will hide them by the thousands, often forgetting where they put them.

close up of nuts on the ground
This stand of trees is almost entirely Hickory with an understory of Pine. It smells so good here. I look and look, but cannot determine which way the Charlie went, although he was here just moments ago.

an abandoned nut on the trail
I'm definitely getting closer! The Charlie must have abandoned his prize when he heard me coming around the bend in the trail! I hear some chattering noises in the trees to my right. Little did I know just beyond my view, I was being watch and talked about!

a squirrel sitting on a fence post
Squirrel Standing on Fence Post: "Hey Bob, do you think that ignoramus with the camera is ever going to catch up to us?"

two squirrels on a bench, one laying on his belly
Squirrel on his belly: "Nah, no way. Man the way he walks - its like a Neanderthal crashing through the forest! Besides, Cousin Alvin is going to play a trick on him."

Squirrel Standing: "Cousin Alvin?"

Squirrel on his belly: "Yeah, he's got his Halloween costume on. He's gonna scare the living daylights out of that Iggy dude."

Squirrel Standing: "Oh man! Have you seen his costume?!"

Squirrel Standing on Fence Post: "I heard him say he was going be all-orangey."

And with that the three squirrels hustled over to the clearing and waited for me to stumble into Cousin Alvin, giggling softly to each other.

Being careful with my footing, as there were many round nuts on the ground and I didn't want to twist my ankle on one. I was looking down at my feet when I heard a Charlie giggling and snickering. I whipped my camera out and whirled, snapping a picture with a smooth motion honed by hours and hours of practice in front of a mirror. They don't call me Quick-Draw McIggy for nothing you know.

And then my brain caught up with my reflexes. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) would have been proud of me.

Tarzan's Cousin, Chuckzan!

As I wrote previously, I had some excitement on Monday evening while walking in Valley Forge National Historic Park. I saw a bunch of wild squirrels and I started seeking one to take a photograph. Remembering to be polite and to say "please", I approached at least fifteen different squirrels and most of them ran off before I could even ask if I could take a photograph.

Gosh, these wild critters are so nervous, unpredictable or jumpy, they are sure squirrelly! But, finally, at long last, I did get one fellow to cooperate.

a grey squirrel out on a branch

No sooner than I had taken the picture I heard this God-awful yelling behind me! It sounded like

"AAaaaAAaaaAAAaaahhhh corRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRooorooooRRRrrrrrrrn!!!"

I quickly turned and saw a shadow flashing by me on the ground... I took the quick, reflexive shot, not knowing how it would come out... And this is what I got!

a picture of a shadow of me hanging on a vine!

It was Chuckzan! The King of the Squirrels swinging on a vine!! Well, his shadow anyway...

Information on my Package

I finally got some information on my package after having waited for it for quite a while.

a picture of my camera

The digital camera I broke back in the end of December or early January was finally repaired and being shipped back to me - I love getting UPS package information in my e-mail box. Once I get the camera back I can go back to trying to take that ultimate squirrel picture! I really like this camera - its a Pentax Optio V-20 and it is about the size of a cell phone but has a 3 inch viewer on it.

close up of my brothers beagle, jane

I asked my brother to bring his dog, Jane into work today. I've not seen my little fur-niece in a while. It was really nice having her hang out with us today. I'm going to ask my brother to bring Jane into work more often since I can't really manage a dog on my own yet.

I wish I could have taken some pictures of you folks when you read the title of this entry! Somehow, I think Lainie would have approved of the title.

Hope you have a good weekend.

Nutty Buddy...

described in the text

A squirrel lies on a couch and tells his Psychologist (or is he a Psychiatrist? - I can't read his dipolma), "When I learned, 'You are what you eat', I realized I was nuts!"

I guess I got to lay off eating peanuts.

Crime Scene - Do Not Cross

Today when I got home from my walk, this is the scene that greeted me from the site of the Battle of Bumper Hill.

my clothes strewn across my front lawn including underwear, shoes, socks, shirt, pants, winter jacket and belt

Suspecting foul play, and fearful someone had hurt Iggy, I called 911. Here is how it went:

Me: Help! It looks like someone either kidnapped or worse! Killed Iggy!

911 Operator: Please calm down Sir. Where are you and what it the current situation?

Me: I'm at Bumper Hill...in front of Iggy's house! He's clothes are strewn all over the yard! I hope he's OK!!

911: An response team is on the way Sir. What is your name?

Me: My name is Iggy!

911 (pregnant pause): ...and you say Iggy...is missing?

Me (suddenly realizing I'm me...): Umm...Oh...you are so right!! Umm...Let's blame the drugs...

911: So you are on drugs, Sir?

Me (a trifle addled): Yeah...hard to get prescription drugs...wow, this stuff makes me feel groooooooovey!

911: The drug team will be there shortly. Don't go anywhere.

The first Policeman that got there walked around the crime scene brushing the donut crumbs from his beard and says, "WTF! Looks like a bunch of OCHA footprints here, I better call the forensic squad."

Me: Whistling Trackfoots? You think????! Why would they leave OCHA prints? I'm so confused...I really wish I hadn't taken these drugs...

The detective in charge comes up and says, "Oh my, looks like some OCHAs were impersonating someone again...I wonder what they were up to? I'll call Interpol."

Drug Squad Dude: Iggy, you idiot...lay off the percocets will you? Good thing you have a legitimate prescription or I'd be taking you in!

Thanks to Interpol's CSI consultant Tori Z, this whodunit was swiftly figured out. No, it wasn't Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, or Miss Scarlet - the answer lies here.

And now I got to think up something in the way of an explanation to tell the neighbors who came home just in time to see me taking pictures of my clothes in my front lawn...and they probably hope I don't take anymore pills.

Please? Cheese! Thanks Louise!!

Well, after over a year of trying and ending up a criminal, I can finally cross off taking a picture of a wild Charlie from my bucket list - except of course, my bucket will be an Orange Round Bucket Alien we all know as an ORBA. I'm so happy! I think Charlie was getting in the holiday mood and decided to be be nice and pose for me.

What happens when you eat a whole lot of nuts?

a fat squirrel in the same pose eating a nut

You get sort of chunky!

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever hope to get a picture of two squirrels at once!

zoomed in, the grey squirrel has a brownish colored face and dark eyes

A "tall, dark and handsome" Charlie. Should we arrange for him to meet Sugar Bush? I bet she'd like this piece of eye candy!
