A true waterman's town, Deal Island seems like a place time time forgot. The 3 mile long island is located in Maryland on the Tangier Sound. The island has three communities, Deal Island, Chance, and Wenona. Visitors will see watermen unloading the day's catch, an oyster hatchery, and crab pickers at Deal Island Harbor on the northern tip of the island.
Each Labor Day weekend for the last 40 plus years, this island community has hosted the annual Deal Island Skipjack races.

The skipjack is a type of sailboat developed on the Chesapeake Bay for oyster dredging. It is the chief oystering boat on the bay, and remains in service due to laws restricting the use of powerboats in the Maryland state oyster fishery.
