First the sad / bad news.
The Save the Spindle campaign failed and the spindle was torn down on May 8, 2008. You can view the video of it being toppled here (at the bottom of the page).
Moving on to happier things, I got the following in an email today.

This is what I see when I leave the house each morning. They are solid wood and carved with a chainsaw by a friend of mine named George.
George has retired from chain saw art - here is some of his work..

The painting was done by the friend I have in North Carolina. She was an Art Professor at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro (retired: December 2006). She was instrumental in establishing UNCG Art Department's distance learning program (teaching art over the Internet). She was fascinated with Fractile (Fractal) Art - and in the mathematics, chemistry and biology behind it. A lot of examples of what I mean are here.
I dug around a bit last night and found a couple email addresses for her and was able to regain contact with her! I got a nice email from her today - after 4 years of being out of touch! :)

We knew the spindle would come down. Shame they weren't able to relocate it someplace else.
