Sargent Major Thomas J. Avery, USMC (Ret.)
September 21, 1925 - July 20, 2008
Born in Macon, GA, he was the son of the late Felix P. and Ollie Avery. Tom joined the U.S. Marines at 17 years of age and served his country proudly in World War II and the Korea and Vietnam wars, retiring as a sergeant major after more than 30 years of service. He is survived by my younger brother, his wife and her family.
He was buried today dressed in his immaculate full dress Marine uniform, folded white gloves, spotless white hat, all brass shining, and a chestful of medals.
Our salute is a genuine one even if our form is not crisp for we mean to show respect and honor to a man truly worthy of both.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to pause and reflect on just how much our military does for us and deserve our thanks.
It sounds as though he led the kind of life that will allow him to rest in peace knowing that he did his duty and served his country. The kind of life someone can be proud of.
