* - The first date, "May 20, 1775," refers to the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. The second date appearing on the state flag is "April 12th, 1776." This date commemorates the Halifax Resolves, a document that places the state among those that demanded unconditional freedom and absolute independence from any foreign power.

Manassas alone had two major civil war battles - and the new Air and Space annex next to Dulles Airport is amazing - they have a SR-71 Blackbird, a bunch of Russian fighter planes, the Enola Gay which dropped the first atomic bomb and a space shuttle there.
And for the walker :) there is the 184+ miles of the breath-taking C and O canal. The Great Falls area is near you and is spectacular - the Potomac River cascades over huge granite boulders there.
