Manning is a town in Clarendon County, South Carolina. The population was 4,025 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clarendon County. It was named after South Carolina Congressman and Governor John Lawrence Manning

Born: January 29, 1816 at Hickory Hill Plantation in Clarendon County, SC
Died: October 1889 in Camden, South Carolina

An Episcopalian and a Democrat, he went to Princeton University in New Jersey and then to South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) and graduated in 1836. When not serving in governmental office, he was a Planter and served as a Colonel in the Confederate States Army. He married Susan Hampton, the sister of General Wade Hampton a well-known and respected Conferate General during the Civil War.

In 1857 - Manning declined an offer by President James Buchanan to become US Minister to Russia

Other notable people from Manning include David Gaillard engineer of the central portion of the Panama Canal, after which the main cut is named. He died of a brain tumor before the work was finished and Lt. Col. James A. Walker, World War II ace fighter pilot and an early member of the Tuskegee Airmen.
