You know how you hear some sayings and expressions and they just stick with you for a while? My Dad used to say "What are the dumb ones like?", whenever me or my brothers screwed something up. Nothing like negative flattery huh?
The expression that's been bouncing around in my head lately, however comes from playgrounds of Elementary School. My memory is a little foggy now, but I think it was in the sixth grade and I was playing kickball with my schoolmates when one of them got bored with things and started climbing the downspout on the side of the school building. He got up to the third floor before he decided he was stuck and wouldn't go up or down.
His increasing panicked yelling finally attracted the attention of the teacher on "yard duty" and after a bit of frenetic excitement complete with hook and ladder truck from the local fire department, my schoolmate was "rescued". The ironic thing was this boy's father was the Fire Chief.
Anyway, gathered up and back in class, the teacher (who will remain unnamed) asked my schoolmate (who will also remain unnamed) what the heck he thought he was doing. My schoolmate mumbled, muttered, and yammered until the teacher, who had been greatly embarrassed by the whole affair, finally lost his temper and said through clenched teeth, "Gather yourself up young man! Your brain is like a BB rattling around in a pickle barrel!"
Ever since then, "like a BB in a pickle barrel" floats through my head at semi-random moments...much like a BB rattling around in a pickle barrel.

It occurred to me some of you are probably too young to remember what a pickle barrel is, they used to be common at the supermarket in the deli section. The ones I remember where large-ish plastic tubs with clear hinged plastic lids and long handled tongs with a plastic bag dispenser nearby. They might even be illegal now.

I don't remember ever seeing a pickle barrel anywhere. Does that mean I'm not as old as I think I am? :)
Have a good day today.
Oooh, so that's where you got this from. You used it a couple weeks back and I'd never heard it before then.
I do believe I remember buying a pickle out of one of those barrels when I was a kid. It's a very faint memory but it's there.
That's a funny story. Kids do some crazy things!
I don't ever remember seeing them, then again I don't like pickles either and wouldn't have noticed them unless it stunk to high heaven. Nice wordle!
We had many corner markets here with the famed pickle barrell. There are a few country stores I can think of that still have them - illegal or not ;)
That story is funny about the fire chief's son. Kids! What are they thinking!
Hugsssss
ok, who ate me bloody post that I left this afternoon?
x
Haha...This comment will be very lame!
Looks like a...barrel... of fun!
I'm such a dork! Have a lovely Sunday!
Pickle barrels were common place when I was young..and since your older than me AK I guess your stores didn't have them..bwahahahahaha! Hope everything is well in your world Iggy! *hugsssssss*
I remember the pickle barrels too. I already know I am old but I don't care. Now pickles just come in big glass jars that sit on top of the deli counter.
I remember pickle barrels!! As far as I know, they are still ESSENTIAL in NY delis!!!! Gosh, now I sooo want a pickle......
Cute story hun!
Very funny! I love that saying. :)
I get a pickle out of a real barrel every time we go to Tom's Farms, our local farmer's market (and more).
That is too funny about the kid climbing the drain pipe. Was he also the one who got his tongue stuck to the pole during winter? I bet his daddy was so proud! LMAO
Guess I'm too young, or else I didn't live far enough out in the country. I don't recall ever seeing a pickle barrel growing up.
Nope, not illegal, well at least I don't think so! There's a few of 'em at the pickle store at the Quakertown Mart! Tara had her first pickle from a pickle barrel there a few weeks ago! She LOVED it! 50 cents.
Never heard the BB saying, that is funny!
