The Green 2,705 Mile(s)

Death Row at Louisiana's Cold Mountain Penitentiary was called "The Green Mile" because the condemned prisoners walking to their execution were said to be walking "the last mile" on a stretch of green linoleum. The main feature of the cellblock, however, was "Old Sparky", the electric chair.

"[W]e each owe a death; there are no exceptions; but, oh God, sometimes the Green Mile seems so long."

-Stephen King

A map of the United Kingdom showing the proposed walk route that basically follows the coast the whole way around the island.

Having been found guilty of "stalking & harrassment of all things orange, fuzzy and flying; the wrongful deaths of Lil and Tiny Bushytail; and the rustling of unnaturally colored sheep," by the International War Tribunal court and condemned to wear an ankle monitoring device, I will cheerfully and willingly serve my sentence by undertaking a Virtual Walk in the United Kingdom even if I am innocent of two of the three charges.

This will be Virtual Walk III and given it will be a walk through England, Wales and Scotland, each mile will almost assuredly be green.

I have not decided upon a starting point - perhaps the wilds of Inverness, Scotland? the navy base in Portsmouth? or perhaps begin with a hunt for the pirates of Penzance? Nor have I decided upon the direction, clockwise or counter-clockwise. Perhaps you will care to make suggestions.

2036 Miles - Virtual Walk II; Key West, Florida to Lubec, Maine

6060 Miles - Virtual Walk I; Beach Haven, New Jersey to the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California and back

Hey - Start in the East midlands!

Sometimes I can't figure out which bits are invented and which bits are true. For example, is that green mile of linoleum true? Becuase if it is that's very interesting.
If not, you have an extraordinary imagination.

So confused.

Hums a little bit of The Proclaimers tune... I would walk 500 miles, I would walk 500 miles.... Oh wait, 500 miles is not nearly enough. I think you might have gotten off a tad easierat the Tribunal if it hadn't been for the unnaturally colored sheep rustling. Have you decided how you are going to get to England? I think Chippy has some flying squirrel relatives...

My suggestion is:

Start at Land's End (bottom of the Cornish coast) and work North through the centre of the country... Through England and up in to Scotland to the part they call "John A Grotes" (not sure on spelling there). Those are the points named as the very end of the land since they stick out furthest at the top and bottom. Then work your way down the East coast of Scotland and England, then along the South coast of England. Cut across Devon (which you would have passed through going North) then spend some time wandering around Wales... Working in a ?Northern direction so that when you're done you can go and do the West coast of Scotland.

Just a suggestion, but that's what I'd do.

And don't forget to check in with me or we'll both be in trouble. ;)

Oh, and Karla... You can't do that... There are only two bridges connecting Wales and England, so unless he's planning on regularly swimming the river seven then he might hit a tiny snag there. ;)

And, Punkn... I was planning on ordering some stuff from the NFB soon since they have a couple of things the RN?IB don't... Maybe I could say I need it quickly and I need a courier, and Iggy could sign up for the job and have his air fare paid for him? That's what they did on The Simpsons when Bart needed to get home and didn't have any way to do it. LOL!

LadyStyx: I didn't touch any sheep - orange or otherwise! :) And I didn't kill any squirrels, I just knocked a couple squirrel's heads together to get them to quit fooling around and get some grub. The recipe well... that was just "there". (Um... well, now, doesn't that sound unconvincing...)

Jess: The Green Mile is a book written by Stephen King and later made into a movie.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as the Louisiana Cold Mountain Penitentiary. I suspect that Mr. King patterned the prison in his story after Angola, known as "the farm" (since it is a farm worked by inmates) - this prison is notorious. There is a museum there which features among its exhibits Louisiana's old electric chair, "Gruesome Gertie", which I'm sure Mr. King renamed "Old Sparky" in his story.

I can't take any credit for Mr. King's unparalleled and breath-taking creativity. :)

Tori: Excellent idea! Hey I got a ride!!!

I think I missed something. When did you reach Canada and the end of your Virtual Walk II???

LadyStyx said...

Well, those two have turned up missing and with that recipe there AND the fact you said older squirrels had to be cooked longer...what are we *supposed* to think??

Waves hello to peace and island11 - and waves to Marmite, I see you there in that little house!!!

That "dangly" bit is Nova Scotia, and while I think many of them don't think so, they are a part of Canada. :)

How come you aren't going over to Ireland? I guess I'll have to check out the punishment again, see if it said just England/Scotland/Wales or the United Kingdom which includes Ireland, correct?

Wales isn't connected to England? Wow, I learned something new today!

I loved the movie "The Green Mile".

Good point ChicagoLady.

From what I can determine, the U.K is properly know as "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales.

THe southern part of Wales is separated from England by the Severn River. The Severn River has two bridges over it - near Bristol so zigzagging would entail crossing this river - Wales itself in not an island though as the northern potion is "attached."

:)

*cough* just to clarify something here matie :)

Ireland is a seperate country... BUT Northern Ireland is a part of Great Britain .. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland make up Great Britain...

*cough over* lol
