What does the 'End' on this sign mean? It is about 25 yards (or 25 meters for you metric folks) from the speed limit sign to the stop sign at the end of the road beyond it, as you can see in the picture.
So - does it mean the speed limit is 25 mph (40 kph) until you get to the end of the road - which is very visible - short of a pea-soup dense fog? Wouldn't you normally drive that way?
Or - does the 'End' mean that the speed limit of 25 mph (40 kph) ends at this spot and you can just floor it and go up to 55 mph (88 kph) the maximum unposted speed limit until you have to stop?
Err, well make that, until you are supposed to stop, they never enforce this stop sign, ever, and only a few people actually stop and fewer still bother to indicate which way they are turning.
Or - does it mean something else altogether?
And in any case, do you really need the word 'End' on this sign?
Is this an example of bureaucratic stupidity and taxpayers being ripped off? It probably cost $5-10 to put the 'End' on the sign - but who knows what 'we' paid for it.

Maybe they had a couple of spare sign making things and "end" was all they could make out of them. Then they'd have had to have this long meeting about where to stick it, and maybe they just decided someone could stick it up on the way home? In which case, maybe that person had to stop at the sign and figured that while they were there they might as well stick it up there to save stopping somewhere else later?
Obviously, the END sign is there is order to remind people that is they crash, their life will END. It makes bpeople be safer on the road, and it is 100% necessary!
Maybe the 'end' word was left over from a 'bend' sign, so it didnt actually cost anything to add, it was recycled from 'bend' to utilize the dosh already spent :)

Silly squirrel, everyone knows it's a form of separatism. They simply couldnt fit "Humans Only" on the sign so they went with an anagram

END Extra Noise Desired this give legal way to long burnouts to the end of the road whilst playing the Kathumpa music with stereo volume up as hi as it will go, the required burnout is to stop just past the never enforced stop sign so that cars coming from the other direction have to lay into the horn creating more needed noise. Don't forget the tottery old lady crossing the road wielding her walking stick to complete the scene.

The "End" thing is interesting. I'll have to notice if we have that anywhere. Maybe they didn't know what to do..the street really does end but they couldn't put "dead end" as it is a really a "T". We have a street like this in my neighborhood so the next time I go out I will look to see if I have an "End" too. :) Ah..another mystery of the road department.
