I took this picture while at one of of my clients yesterday - seems like they lost some files and called me, all in a panic, and asked me to investigate - they even sent someone over in a car to drive for me!
When I got there, the owner says to me, "Iggy, we really need those files! Please help us figure out where they are or how they got lost." So I rolled up my sleeve (singular), cracked my knuckles and looked around.
I wonder if leaving a username and password on your monitor in a very busy and public hallway might cause a problem? Thankfully the client isn't a hospital or credit union!
Well, it turns out, the monitor belongs to the person that moved the 'missing files' that were in her 'My Documents' folder to a subfolder called 'Your Documents' because she just knew they weren't 'her' documents! I spent a couple minutes moving the files to the 'mapped server' hard drive where they belonged and would automatically get backed up each night. I then did some user training.
I left the place thinking of Ron White's immortal words, "But let me tell you something, folks: You can't fix stupid. There's not a pill you can take; there's not a class you can go to. Stupid is forever."
Oh well, I needed the money.

I thought the lesson about not leaving your username and password lying around was given to everyone... Guess someone missed that class? LOL!
Arr, not stupid just insecure and mistunderstood. Besides, when you're trying to get onto someone elses computer, it's USEFUl not stupid to leave the username and pass lying around.
I have no idea what a "mapped server hard drive" is so I guess I'm pretty stupid, too. (and right now even MySpace is challenging my brain)

Stupid may be forever, but there are different degrees of stupid. Some people who claim to be stupid (AK) are actually not nearly as stupid as they think they are, once they are given a few instructions.
I just want to say something here -
None of you folks are stupid. If I implied such - I apologize profusely.
Alice Kay puts herself down when it comes to computer-savviness - but I know for a fact she can and does do well troubleshooting her PC.
Marmite is not stupid either - her blob and wit shows that a lot of her brain cells are not only working, they are working quite well indeed.
I was dismayed by this company's lack of security, user training, and Microsoft's 'pandering to the masses' which is what the "My Doucment" thing is really all about.
I know and am certain Alice Kay would understand mapped server hard drive if I was both smart enough to figure out how to explain it in plain non-geek tech-speak and took the time to do so.
I'm a geek but not so much of a geek that I understand a mapped server hard drive either. But I do know enough to keep my passwords under wraps. Problem is I need help finding them sometimes. My memory isn't what it used to be. ;-)
It's a computer...you turn it on and you type..right? LOL
Thats why I keep my son at home..so he can fix it when it's broke!
