Dog Slippers

In the wee hours of this morning, in the darkest of the night, I had a very vivid and life-like dream.

The dream was so vivid I felt as if I was awake...I was dreaming about me being asleep on the sofa, when cold and shivering, I dreamt I woke up and put my cold feet down beside the sofa - and before they hit the ground, they softly encountered the warm, silky-soft fur of a long-haired and faithful dog. Ahhh, Dog Slippers.

my dog Gypsy, a black lab - border collie mix I got from the humane society

My dog always slept on the floor immediately beside me on the sofa. And if for some reason I awoke and went to bed, she would get up, follow me into the bedroom and lay down beside the bed. For years, each and every morning, when I woke up and braced myself to face the day ahead, I would swing my feet out and slowly lower them - and tell my dog "Good morning!" by softly rubbing her with my feet.

For some reason - last night I mentally went back in time in my dream - and re-enacted this soul-healing, spiritually-reassuring routine. She has been gone now for some years - and badly missed and not even slightly forgotten.

I know exactly what you mean *hugsss* My cockerspaniel died when he was 12 years old..that was 23 years ago and somedays I miss him so much I just cry! The best friend you can have is your dog. They love you unconditionally, never ask for anything except love, food, water and pottybreak. *sigh*

As I am trying to write this comment, Toby is lying on the couch next to me, with his little head on the keyboard and trying to lick my hand each time it gets near him!

But I know what you mean. I've found myself wanting to come home quickly when I'm feeling down because this little furball will cheer me right up. He was acting sick'ish the other day and I was too scared to check on him the following morning because I didn't hear his tags jingle. I was scared the little guy was dead.

Oy vey, when that day actually comes I know I'll be a wreck. Why'd I get a dog just to get this attached?

As you said...
"soul-healing, spiritually-reassuring"
How beautiful Iggy. Dreams are a channel, and she came to you.

I think I'm with island on this one. Your beloved dog came to you in your dream for a visit. I would guess to remind you that you are loved and not to be sad because she's always with you.

One of the first things we did after we got married 36 years ago was get a dog - I always wanted one and was never allowed one as a child. We've not been without one since. Your dog came to you to remind you just how loved you are. It might just be time to look at another Dog Slipper. Huge hugs!

You'll never forget her, and I'm sure she came to you to remind you that people love and care about you. Perhaps - as others have said - it's time to get another dog slipper?

my best doggie pal has been gone since 93 and there are still times when I will feel him right next to me pushing me out of bed, and half/sleep will say, 'bill, mooooooove, your hogging the bed.'..and wake up in bed all alone...they never leave you..

It sounds like she is still very much with you.

I agree with island, Styxie, and all the others. A dog's love is unconditional, and she wanted to remind you that you are loved, no matter how down you are feeling.
