You may have noticed I've not been in the holiday mood nor quite so prolific with posting new entries of late - and this will probably continue for the foreseeable future. I will be trying to comment as much as I can but will probably not be writing as much.
Why?
Things have become rather difficult of late - finances have become squeezed and things at work continue to be slow - the effort required to help keep a small computer consulting firm that focuses on the Pharmaceutical industry, specifically new drug development work, afloat has taken its toll on me both in terms of creative energy and health.
As evidenced with the over 58,000 people being recently laid off by drug companies large (such as Merck and Co., Pfizer, Eli Lily, and Johnson and Johnson) and small, there is a lot cutting back and retrenching going on in the industry. The consultant is usually the first to go and the last one invited back.
And while we desire so many illnesses to be cured "someday", illnesses like Cancer in every form, Alzheimer's disease, and Diabetes, a great many drugs produced today do not cure anything at all. Too many drugs are "take them for life" and "work" by suppressing the symptoms and do nothing at all to address and terminate the underlying cause of the disease. I don't like this situation - I feel these sorts of drugs come from the unspoken market dictate, "we want to sell pills - not cure anyone". I am struggling with the inner confict this has caused me.
The largest growth market for "drug company" consultants like me, at the moment, seems to be assessing, analysing, and figuring out how to take on the ever increasing and ever changing regulatory burdens imposed by the U.S. Government.
This burden is imposed through the governments ever increasing minions at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institute of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, The Health Care Financing Administration (Medicare), National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute and (too) many others.
As with many other US businesses, the productive (i.e., someone that makes something other than paperwork) workforce labors under a multitude of productivity-stifling laws, regulations, and other forms of "official-ese" and as you can see with the examples of GM, Ford, and Chrysler, the cost of this burden may well lead to a company's demise.
Do not misunderstand me, I feel that both drug and job safety as well as job security are very important. Competing with countries with little to no regard for safety or security (e.g., China) however, has become nearly impossible. I guess there is a lot of safety but no security with staying home away from dangers at work because one is unemployed.
Moreover the self-injuring US public speaks when it votes with its wallet - and goes to places like Walmart and buys cheaply made, inexpensive products from China. This seemingly sensible behaviour has severely exacerbated this country's economic woes.
I do understand the feeling that "big business" in the USA needs to be watched - the hunt for the almighty dollar most certainly causes all sorts of bad behaviour. It seems to be wishful thinking that big business will be a "good citizen" just because of some ordinary "innate" desire to do the "right" thing. Unrestrained capitalism has led to over-exploitation at every level including environmental and the workforce.
I find it really ironic that "communist" China is the powerhouse of Capitalism in the world today.
At any rate, my focus over the foreseeable future will be "reinventing" the company for which I work in order to find some business niche(s) that will generate income and failing that, filling in the unemployment forms and filing them. My brother, as the owner of the business does not even have this "luxury" - for him the endgame is working through bankruptcy proceedings. So I am absorbed with helping him avoid this at all practical costs.
I welcome any reasoned and practical suggestion(s). As stressful and strained as the times are - I am blessed with knowing I've support, even if its just in the form of "ineffectual" words. Believe me - you probably will never know just how effective those words of yours may be.

Stay strong...life gets daunting at times.
I too find it ironic the Communist China is has the big bucks these days...more than likely because we out source everything instead of making it in house, so to speak.
Like I said stay strong...the ecomony can't be shit forever.
The only words I have for you are not encouraging, but at least ego-stroking. I agree with you about the drug companies, the masking of symptoms effect, etc. I wish more could be done to curb this.
Alas...I sincerely hope that you are successful in helping your brother, helping yourself, and finding a sustainable source of income. Sitting in banking, a most dreaded industry as of late, I worry nearly everyday. We'll be thinking of you, and feel refreshed when we seeing your comments, funny jokes and all. :)
I am sorry to hear that you are having a difficult time. My thoughts are with you and I will keep my fingers crossed that things work out soon.
In the meantime, keep your chin up and know that people all over the country, and possibly world, are thinking of you and wishing they could be their to give you a hug or hold your hand.
I wish I had something useful to say, but I don't. All I can offer are comments like, "stay strong," "hang in there," and "I hope things improve for you soon!" Encouraging? Perhaps! Helpful? Not in the least! But I'm afraid they're the best I can do!
Well, I can offer hugs too... Hugs always help, even if it's just briefly... Right?
Hugs, hugs, and more hugs!
Oh Iggy, you're always so upbeat and sweet I'd no idea things were sucking on your end job-wise. I do hope things work out at work. It's hard having a full-time and constantly stressing over it and it's also hard once you're let go.
Regardless of what happens, I have faith that you'll come through on the other end stronger and with new ways of viewing the world around you.
I'm so sorry you are going through these tough times!! Seems like just about everyone is, or has family and friends who are.
I know we as a country will pull through though because tough times don't last, but tough people do!! Hugs to you!!!!
I think the best thing you can do is take this letter and forward to all the people that repersent your state,THEY DO WORK FOR YOU REMEBER.And im going to cut and paste this to mine.Do you remeber when walmart first got started and theyer motto was....its got to be made in america for us to sell it.Thats not even the case now.I'd love to see everybody Boycote porducts made in china.Who do we blame, it goes back to free trade agreement and even further.. But i take this seruise and im going to forward it. Thank you for this .. Ya ole Pal JR
We've talked quite a bit about things like this over the years I've known you. It's a tough situation for you, for your brother, and in the end, for those around you. Hang in there. The light will shine thru the clouds soon and things will hopefully become a bit brighter for you. In the meantime, hang on to your friends and they will hang on to you. *hugs*
*sings the song...Don't stop believin'" :)
Hang in there!!!!
And don't get me started on the "made in china" I will go to several stores to find "USA".
I hope a brilliant idea comes to you soon!!!!
(hugs)
The sad thing is that the work you are doing is so important. Do you bid on government contracts? I absolutely HATE these tough times. If I think of anything, you will be the second to know. Keep the faith hun, and keep on keeping on. Stay strong. I care.
Believe me Iggy I hear everything you are saying and all the things you aren't saying too. I work for the school board aka government office. There is SO much I'd love to say, but I know I can't, not if I want to hang on to this little tiny bit of security that keeps me no more than one pay check away from being homeless - it's a constant inner struggle between my belief system and survival.
I'm here for you pal :-)
I don't have much too add, but a cyber hug. It is time for me to hit the pavement and find some type of employment to supplement my pension, should have done it in Sept, and I am a bit nervous, so I can only imagine how you, and your brother are feeling with the business on the line. Stress is not good for us, but it seems like it is all around.
Keep your chin up!
I'm so sorry Iggy; I know there is lots of stress involved in these uncertain times for both you and your brother. It just "stinks" with the way the economy is and I don't foresee it getting better any time soon. I'll probably depress you further with what I say (hope not). I think we do give away too many of our jobs to foreign countries and to machines yet (especially with the machine part) it is sooo "easy" to do. ATM machine instead of going inside the bank to make your deposit, pay a bill online instead of writing out a check and mailing it, etc. I certainly understand why you are not in the holiday spirit. It dawned on me today that in addition to the sadness this time of year invokes in me, it is also the "have's" and "have nots" that is getting to me this year. We walk the neighborhoods with Koda and we see elegant Christmas displays in front of people's houses and tall Christmas trees in their living rooms and across the street there is an empty house with a for sale sign that says "bank owned property". That is repeated in multiple neighborhoods.
Just so sad......
But we have to remember this is not all there is and hope
so I don't think I gave you any words of wisdom......
just take care of yourself and know that you are a very dear friend
betty
I'm so sorry to hear of your small company's woes. I've been unemployed now for almost a year. It is hard not to give up. I haven't given up, but I'm not all that hopeful either. Just resigned. I hope you all find a new niche to make up your gaps in income.
((((((((Iggy))))))))))) :( so sorry about all the worry about work, your like me in the fact of being self employed..... we, in this house are on the bare bones of our arses and just hanging on to the house by a sliver, cos I lost me day time childminding nippers due to my surgery...... so I can fully see where your coming from......
You are a bright very inteligent bloke and have so much going for you.... just keep saying my mantra...'this to will pass'....
Mine was made worst cos Im trying to support 4 of us as 2 of me lads were made redundant and only get $100 a week unemployment.....
but this to will pass....... I know my words are of no help but maybe knowing Im thinking of you and hoping things will turn around soon for you....... if not..... I might have to sell up and buy a house over there and let ya live with me LOL
x
I keep reading posts like these everywhere. I wrote one similiar to it a while back. All I can say is you are in good company, if that even means anything to you.
In the mean time, I will be browsing through your blog. I like it.
I have no words of wisdom, I have no advice. All I have is me to be there for you if you need a shoulder or someone to vent to. You know I love you my friend and my heart cries for you when you are in such dire straits (((((HUGS)))) hang in there my friend. You will pull through, in that I have confidence.
I'm so sorry. I know what it's like to have your own business and struggle and then struggle some more. Scott is a business owner and it can get tough to drum up business and have it be steady. I don't think we have ever experienced long periods of stability at this. Anyway...I don't want to ramble, but I do want to say I'm thinking of you...and just that...I feel for you. Take care of yourself.
Oh my friend..I'm late to this..I've been up to my ass in alligators..but all is good here which makes it that much sadder that they are not good for you. I wish i had some brilliant way for you to turn your business around. but I do think you should try selling your photos..they are fantastic..You may not be rich in money but you are rich in people that love you.
I don't have any advice to offer because things like unemployment or finance troubles are foreign conceps to me. My husband and I are lucky that we both have relatively stable jobs.... But, like everyone here, I hope things turn for the better for you soon.
Oh, Iggy! I can relate to the fears. Only five years ago I thought I was going to end up on the street and life looked so bleak and I was in such pain. I could not see the light anymore--so I humbly handed it over. Within two weeks--instead of being homeless and unable to physically support myself, I ended up here--safe.
I may be poor financially, but I am happier and richer than I have ever been since I landed on my feet in Fargo. You never know how huge, sad, overwhelming changes can end up being wonderful in the end.
Times have been so hard. I watched Dagan and Leah lose their dream home due to unscrupulous contractors. Dagan had a good job and Leah was working two jobs. Dagan lost his job right before Christmas last year--but he stayed so positive--and miraculously had another good job within a month. Then Leah lost BOTH her jobs! They had to go thru bankruptcy and Leah was unemployed for 8 months.
But Leah recently found a (kind of crappy) job in thenick of time. She's just glad to have a job and they won't lose their nice place they are renting. They landed on their feet, too. Other than Leah is looking and hoping for a different job eventually--life is good. And we are just a tiny drop in the economy bucket.
Everywhere you hear of this person and that--of families losing their homes. Things are on a very slow upward climb--but it is generally difficult for most people. Makes one grateful for all the things we take for granted--a roof over your head, food in the cupboard and frig, clothes on your back, a bed, a shower/bath--but most of all--people! The people you love and who love you. All the people you care about and who care about you. In times like this people reach out to help each other and comfort each other. Family is so important. Friends lift your soul and hold you up in the hard times. You have touched many people and have much support. Maybe there will be a positive change? Maybe you and your brother will tap into another area that will feel better for you both? I know it's hard--but think try to think positive. And when you can't--hand it all over to God/The Universe--who usually has much better things in mind for our pathes than we can think of ourselves. Blessings to you, my friend!! You are in my thoughts and prayers. :):)
Iggy, I don't know your area of expertise, but one thing you said jumped out at me. "Niche". That's your open door. Use your knowledge and skills to find it. It's there. You might have to think outside the box, or consider options you might otherwise think not worth pursuing. But, if you look, it's there.
I wish the best to both of you.
Oh wow. Yeah...not sure if I have any wisdom to impart, sadly. So I'll just send more and more HUGS! (Let me know when you've had too many!)
I don't know if I have the right words to say Iggy, but Im truly sorry for your struggles, times have affected so many people and has changed the way people live their lives now it is truly sad. I help when I can here and there but I never feel like it is enough. I truly hope good and better times are in the future for you!! HUGS
a prayer for your financial security - and for your purposeful thinking to have impact on the things that you want to change for the better.
Not much to add but {{{{HUGS}}}} to you and your brother. I too work in the pharmaceutical industry but am on the generic side which has been fairly steady. I hope you find your niche and are hugely successful at what you do.
*joins the "not much to add" peeps*
.oO(line for *HUGZ* must start here...)
*Gets in line for hugs way at the end, figuring I'll be waiting awhile till it's my turn.*
