A day with the folks...

I haven't written much lately - it has been mostly a case of the post-summer blahs I think, but this past weekend, I ventured out and took two trips. One was to the Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn, PA which is located on the historic Susquehanna and Easton roads and opened in 1890.

Back in the early days of European settlement, William Penn, the founder of the Pennsylvania Colony, negotiated with the Lenape Native Americans to allow white settlement in the colony between the Delaware River and the Susquehanna River to the west where the towns of Harrisburg, Columbia, Lancaster, and York would soon be built. One of the early roads west from the center of Philadelphia pre-dating the Revolutionary War was the Susquehanna (Algonquian Indian for 'muddy current') Road.

I went hoping to find the gravestones of my great-grandfather and his wife, and my great-great-grand-father and his wife, my great-great-great-uncle and his wife as well as five other ancestors. I might write about that trip soon. What I found wasn't quite what I expected. On Sunday, I drove over to my parents because my mom promised me dinner in return for me fixing her computer's printer (actually I would have gone in any event, but dinner was super-delicious).

pumpkins and flowering mums in the park
Before dinner, my dad and I walked over to Washington Crossing Historic Park to see the Harvest Day celebration. It was a bright and sunny day and it grew rather warm. My mother joined us, and we crossed the river and walked on the Delaware and Raritan Canal around the charming town of Titusville. I went hoping for some autumn foliage pictures - but...it's not quite here yet.

a picture of the river through very green trees - the sun sparkling on the water
Its still pretty green along the Delaware River near Trenton, NJ.

piles of magazines all airplane related
While at my folks, my dad returned all the magazines he's "borrowed" from me lately, and they form quite a stack. If any of you have a young son or daughter who is crazy for all things airplane - let me know - and I will send all or part of this stack on its way to you.

Sounds like a lovely weekend...and the weather was gorgeous too. I, too, am waiting for the fall foliage. Hope I don't accidentally miss it.

Maybe you're lucky the leaves haven't turned yet. Our trees are half bare already up here. Looks like it was a pretty day to wander. I'll be interested to hear and see what you found out with the graves of your relatives, too.

I can't believe they do a Washington Crossing reenactment in December! Brrr! You have so many interesting places to visit in the East. Thanks for bringing us along. :)

It sounds like you had a nice relaxing weekend. We got back from our road trip last night - am so glad to be home. The trees had not quite changed here either. But it was still good to get away.

Huge hugs!

You have to most beautiful scenery to visit and your stories always make me feel like I am there. I am jealous because the natural settings leave a lot to be desired in my part of the country! LOL!

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Oh yesterday was absolutely beautiful. Definitely made me wish I had a car to go out on a scenic drive. Count your blessings!

Today was freezing though and I've been missing the warm days like whoa. Hope the week is off to a good start for you. I've been out of the loop cause of my new schedule and miss stopping in like I used to!

those are cool with all the magazines, Iggy. LOL, no one here is fond of flying. I loved the houses; so quaint looking, we have nothing like that here. And that pretty green area was so gorgeous! I'd love walking through that.

I do miss your writing when you aren't writing, but I understand the blahs at times; just don't go tooo far and tooo in between without some words written

What a beautiful day! Such great time spent together. Ok have to ask - with magazines like that are you by chance a pilot? My husband is currently training for his private pilot and reads a lot of those magazines - kind of looks like our living room coffee table.
Thanks for the cool story once again - you're like my own personal history channel.

I have the post summer blahs as well. I am always sad when summer leaves us.

I used to visit cemeterys all the time when I was in college. I would use the epitaphs as inspiration for poetry or short stories.

Dude, I just wrote "cemeterys." Wow. Obviously my brain hasn't been turned on yet this morning!
