Thanksgiving, Turkey and what's in the water?

As many of you know, I was "home alone" for Thanksgiving day. I wasn't feeling well and the rest of family was out of town - some as far as Florida and some in South Carolina. Unperturbed, as the date of the holiday is far less important to me than the actual celebrating it - I waited til they came home and suggested we go down the shore like we usually do, the weekend following Thanksgiving.

Well, that weekend didn't work out but I did see my younger brother play one of his annual "Old People's Home" gigs with the three guys he plays guitar with... and I saw my niece play some hoity toity tunes with her High School orchestra chamber music set - Haydn and Bach (ugh!) but they woke up the crowd with some Leroy Anderson tunes like Sleigh Bells and Syncopated Clock.

So it came to pass, that this weekend was "Thanksgiving Day" down the New Jersey shore with my folks. The weekend adventure actually started last Tuesday, when my mom called and said, "Can you buy a 15 pound turkey right after work today and start thawing it? My grocery store is all out of them!" Always willing to oblige, and knowing my folks live about 20 miles from the nearest other grocery store, I acquired a 17 pound "bird" and put in my refrigerator so it would be thawed by the weekend.

Wednesday I gave the bird a poke and it was still a solid chunk. Thursday morning it was slightly more yielding, and by Friday morning it was "well on its way to thawsville".

I have been very behind in my blog reading, and had only recently read Matty Thoughts where he tells us of his recent memory problems. He's a good sport and is able to poke fun at his own follies.

Matty's entry reminded me of my own father, who has on more than one occasion when leaving the houseboat to head for home, has forgotten his car keys, gone back down the dock and gotten them, forgotten his cellphone, gone back and got it, left the car keys on the counter on the boat when he picked up his cell phone and had to go back and get them, forgotten his medicine and gone back and gotten the pill bottles - and on one occasion, making no less that 7 trips up and down the dock! I sat there in the car rolling my eyes while waiting for him to get his act together and slowly started to seethe.

And then I encountered my other neighbor Martha's blog entry (both Matty and Martha live nearby) where she writes her horror tale about remembering concert tickets (or rather, not remembering them!) over at The Daily Grind I was sitting smug and thinking to myself, "Sheesh, I would never do that!"

Last Friday was one where the minutes felt like hours as I looked at the clock hundreds of times, eager to get home, packed, and on my way down to the seashore. It has been a long time since I've last been down there! Once home, I threw some clothes in a bag, grabbed my briefcase with a bunch of Christmas Cards I wanted to address, grabbed my camera, and checked my email when I found one from a dear friend asking me to keep a close family member in thoughts and prayer... and deep in thought, I got into the car and headed to the seashore - in the dark.

About 85 miles down the road and within 20 minutes of getting to the beach, I suddenly realized I had left the turkey in the refrigerator...

turkey in the fridge

Martha, Matty, Dad... I hope you will forgive me for silently snickering at your memory woes. Maybe it's something in the local water?

P.s., I'm going to meet my mom tomorrow to give her the turkey - she plans to cook it and give my grandfather some when she and my dad meet him for lunch sometime this upcoming week.

P.s.s., My mom got an oven-stuffer chicken when I called her to tell her I screwed up and forgot the turkey. We all had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.

Hey ... forgetting things happens to the best of us. Some of us more than others. When I was a teen, my parents always laughed every time I left the house and came by in less than 5 minutes, because I always forgot something. I have improved some with age, due to my own irritation with myself, but I'm not 100% improved ;) I still forget things when I leave the house, or I don't forget things, and think I did ... lol, so I still turn around. Oh well, I do the best I can, as I am sure your father does!

Oh I just CRINGE at this types of mistakes in my own life. Don't ya just hate it?! But sounds like you guys had a good attitude.

I knew it!

I'm NOT the ONLY one with memory fatigue. LOLOLOLOLOL

As I see it Iggy, it isn't the forgetting part that is bad. It's the "when you remember" part. If you're a minute away from home when the turkey pops up in your mind, it's no big deal. If you're two hours away, it's a senior moment.

And I have too many of them.

I used to be so impatient with people (including Dagan) who couldn't remember things. I knew where every single thing was in my apartment--closets, drawers--and even every single thing in my garage. I had jobs where I juggled many, many balls and was known for remembering the little details others would forget. Then along came fibro...my mind turned into a foggy shadow of its former self. Was a huge "God will get you for that" shift in my life--hehe! I now suffer from a perpetual case of CRS (can't remember sh*t) disease--ROFL! But I never nag anymore or complain or silently shake my head when people forget things. Probably has made me a better person. ;)

LOL Iggy! But what really mattered was your last sentence "We all had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner".

Didn't matter tht it was a few weeks "late", didn't matter that it was chicken instead of turkey, but it mattered that those who enjoy celebrating holidays together took the effort to make it a special time and be together; and I am sure this story of you forgetting the turkey will be repeated in subsequent years as you gather together :)

I'm glad you had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. (i bet that chicken didn't think so, tho) Spending time with your family is important, and I'm glad you were able to do that.

*hugs* and thanks for the prayers.

You'd think my head wasn't attached the number to things I forget every single day!!! I'll go into the kitchen, get there, and then think, "What was I doing again???". Then go back to the livingroom, remember, go back to the kitchen....you guessed it, FORGOT AGAIN!!! Everyone else thinks it's so funny too, lol!

Hugs! Did you cook the turkey on your own then when you got back???

I KNEW you were laughing at me! After the tix were back in hand and we were sitting in our seats I thought it was pretty funny too!

I guess it is something in the air! (or our ages!)

I'm glad your mom was able to get a chicken.... all in all, it's the company and not the food!

It happens to all of us! Now with a kid, I am definitely even more forgetful and lose track of things easily. Glad Thanksgiving was wonderful, regardless. Who needs turkey anyway?

I'm so glad that you all made the best out of your Thanksgiving meal.
I think being forgetful goes hand in hand with being really smart...there just isn't enough room in there for some of the little things. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Too funny, Iggy! And thank you for the birthday wishes! :)

jeez, I do things like that all the time. I would leave the house without my head if it wasn't attached.

The most important part of spending time with family is spending time with family. The turkey will just have to deal with not being the center of attention.

That was pure karma my friend! LOL! Not really..I think with the frantic schedules that everyone tries to keep up with it is inevitable that we forget things from time to time.

It sounds like you had a great time. When you said you were in Jersey visions of Snooki and the Jersey Shore came to mind. LOL! There is nothing wrong with being forgetful but PLEASSEEE don't start self tanning and turning orange like those people on that show! LOL!

Oh my gosh Iggy! I had to laugh... not at you but with you. You were describing me when you described your dad. I cannot tell you how many times I go back into work to get something else and leave something I brought in with me behind. I even locked the church keys in several times, meaning I had to call Fr. to come let me in.

You are in good company! And all was well in the end. Sounds like a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Huge hugs!

I have to write things down so I remember. I'm chalking it up to being busy and not old age....

Well, I'd love to say I've never - but I certainly have -forgotten way to many things, occasions, appts, etc. That's because we're not perfect, only One is. Glad that you and your family could enjoy a blessed time together even if it was over chicken and not turkey. It's the together of family that's most important, even when our minds are, well, ahem, not all together.

*Chuckles* Ah, don't worry Iggy... Stuff like that happens to all of us at some time or another.

At least you had your thanksgiving weekend... Despite the lack of turkey. It just goes to show that it's the company and not the meal that makes the holidays special! :)

I will go to a cupboard and open it and then stand there thinking, "Why did I do this?" Twenty minutes later, when I'm into something else, I'll remember what I wanted to get out of the cupboard. Yeah, I would totally have left that turkey in the fridge.

I found a turkey that comes right out of the freezer at the store and goes directly into your oven. No thawing.

It was a good turkey, too.. except we didn't get to stuff it. But we cooked it as a side dish
